SURFS UP THIS WEEKEND

The British National Surf Championships kick off tomorrow at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. The two day event has just been given the go ahead, as huge swell is predicted for the weekend. Surfers from across the country will descend on Fistral beach to compete in the prestigious competition, and with categories for Womens, Mens, Masters and Veterans, this is sure to be a showcase of top surfing talent. Contest director Anton Roberts said, ““We’re expecting a solid swell meaning ideal conditions for this prestigious contest. 9am Saturday will see the first heats in the water!” We’ll keep you posted on the results after the weekend.

Tom Costelloe appeal confirmed

Promoter / DJ Tom Costelloe's appeal against his conviction for allowing drugs to be sold in Plymouth's Dance Academy is to be heard on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 October in the Court of Appeal.

We understand that the appeal will be heard as part of a parcel of cases affected by the 'Davis Points' - a new rule that witness statements given anonymously (like those given by the cops who participated in the Dance Academy trial) are no longer admissable as evidence. The Lord Chief Justice and a panel of judges may decide on a retrial, to quash his conviction, or not to do anything at all, in which case he will still able to appeal on other grounds. It's unlikely there will be a decision for a couple of weeks.

Fireworks spectacular at the Sandsifter!

Halloween treats for film fans!

Truro based film production company o-region have a feast of spooky treats for you this Halloween with a thrilling evening of music and film at this month’s roughcut, their renowned short film evening. Taking place on 13 October at Miss Peapods in Penryn, the evening will feature a cocktail of video nasties and putrid punk rock! They’ve spent months trawling the dark recesses of the film world to bring you filth, gore, blood and guts from filmmakers all over the UK, with films from Anastasia Kirillova, Esther May Campbell, Ham Williams and Shelley Claxton. The cinematic highlight of the evening will be a world premiere of Fleapit, a horror double bill made especially for the event by o-region favourites Brett Harvey and Ian Bucknole. Tales of the supernatural and horrible horrors will be complemented by a performance from all girl punk rockers The Eyelids. Get in the mood with some horror fancy dress because there will be a prize for the most shocking outfit, and gruesome games and bloodcurdling quizzes top off this feast of Halloween treats!

The Guillemots head to Cornwall

We are delighted to announce that the Guillemots will be bringing their 'Fishbone for a drink' tour to Cornwall this autumn, with not one, but two dates, firstly at the Carnglaze Caverns, Liskeard on the 19th November and Princess Pavilion, Falmouth 20th November.

Promoters, SW1 Productions said 'The band were looking for unusual venues to play on this tour, they'd already asked us about Princess Pavilion as they'd heard it had a bandstand, and they loved the idea of playing in a Cave!'

The Guillemots (which is the plural of the name of a group of seabirds, but most often meaning the Common Guillemot), first emerged in 2005 with a support slot on Rufus Wainwright's sell out UK tour. 2006 brought the release of their Mercury Prize nominated debut album 'Through the Windowpane', which narrowly lost out to The Artic Monkeys, but firmly established the band with much critical acclaim.

In March this year, the bands follow up album 'Red' charted at no.9 in the UK album charts, with hit single 'Get Over It' reaching no.20 in the same month.

No strangers to Cornwall, the Guillemots supported KT Tunstall at the Eden Sessions earlier this year and in 2007 supported Paolo Nutini at the Rip Curl Boardmasters.

But this will be their first headline show in the region and as you would expect from the band, will take on a slightly non traditional format... 'Fishbone for a drink' tour is in association with Future Shorts who are one of the leading and most innovative short film labels, who passionately believe in getting short films seen and creating a culture around the medium, Future Shorts is recognized by filmmakers, the industry and press alike as the cutting-edge short film label.

The format will be Future Shorts setting up a cinema screen to show short films with Guillemots providing an improvised live soundtrack as the first part of the show followed by a full Guillemots performance as the second part of the show. The Carnglaze Caverns show will be seated. Support details to be announced.
